Barbecue Grills: Which Grill Should You Buy, Charcoal Or Gas?

It's grilling time... are you ready? Late summer/early fall is my preferred time of the year because it means great friends, games and barbecue! Make sure you get a good portable grill for tailgating or trekking or going to the park. The Weber Baby Q is my favorite portable gas grill, but there are many good portable charcoal grills too. Here are few tips on shopping for a new grill (full size or portable) to aid you get ready for the grilling season.

If you are considering getting a new grill, or barbecue, you will be faced with huge number of options to select between. However, there is one choice which you will need to make fairly immediately in your quest for the perfect grill for you. That decision is whether to buy a charcoal or gas grill.

Both charcoal and gas grills have benefits over each other depending on what you are looking for and how you plan to use it. However, the good news is that they both make food which has been found to have very little difference in taste. Whether you select the gas or charcoal version you can rest assured that they will both have the capability to make great tasting fare.

For most, a barbecue is not a proper barbecue if it does not include cooking over hot coals. This can take a long time to be at the optimum cooking temperature and can be tough to master, and in addition there are other problems to deal with once the cooking is over. However, the primal nature in many individual (particularly men!) makes the charcoal grill plead to them as they are required to start and tend the fire for the interval of the time for which they are cooking. In addition, most individual feel that cooking over coals gives the food a different taste and smell which you do not obtain with a gas grill. However, as mentioned previously, this has not been found to be the case.

A gas grill might make life less complicated. The flames are produced simply by touching a button and the temperature can be controlled at the turn of a button. This is more like cooking over a traditional kitchen cooker, only outside. A gas grill even removes the debris once the cooking is done as there are no coals to clear out.

As you can see, both types of grill have their plus points. However, it is important to think about your use of your grill before taking any decision. If you plan to use it infrequently you might prefer a charcoal grill because they are less costly. A gas grill will cost more to purchase, but if you are going to use it regularly it will become more efficient after a while. For the newcomer to the grill, a charcoal grill may be the highly sensible option. If you notice you are using it a lot and it is becoming expensive to purchase new coals you will then have the opportunity to upgrade to a gas barbecue if you wish. If you splash out for a gas grill right away you may find that if you use it rarely it will be an unnecessary expense that you should not have made.

Whichever grill you choose - whether it's a big grill or a portable grill, whether it's charcoal or gas - there is little between the two types of grill in terms of the quality of the food cooked on them. Take your decision wisely and your grill is sure to be enjoyed on numerous occasions over time and makes the best addition to any summer evening.
